Academic Guidance: For Freshman

Beginning high school is an exciting time; however it can also be challenging and stressful. It doesn't have to be. Remember, you are not alone. There are many people at Bethlehem to help ease you into this transition. The following is a monthly list of activities and suggestions to help make your year a little easier.

Freshmen Year Planning Calendar

August - September

  • Freshmen Orientation 
  • Students should begin the year with a concentrated effort on managing their time efficiently and developing effective study habits.
  • Welcome supper for freshmen, new students and seniors.
  • Counselor will visit classrooms to discuss study skills.
  • Counselor will visit classrooms to discuss clubs and extra-curricular activities.
  • Counselor will introduce and begin Career Cruising and ILP.
  • Students struggling in a course should meet with their teacher or counselor for help in developing effective study strategies.
  • Freshmen Day of Reflection 

 

October - November

  • Students should review grades by using PowerSchool
  • Students should reassess their study habits and work to improve their skills.
  • Counselor will visit classrooms and preview the EXPLORE Test.
  • Students should apply to Governor's School for Entrepreneurs.
  • EXPLORE Test 
  • Parent / Teacher Conferences 

 

December

  • Students should be preparing for semester exams .
  • Counselor will visit classrooms to review the results of the EXPLORE.

 

January

  • Students should focus on their second semester courses and improving study skills if needed.

 

February - March

  • Counselor will visit classroom to begin pre-registration of classes for next year.
  • Students should review course booklet before selecting classes and discuss with parents and
    counselor.
  • Counselor will discuss with students calculating their Grade Point Average (GPA), class ranking, and Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarship (KEES).
  • Students will begin putting together their resume.

 

April - May

  • Students struggling in a course should meet with their teacher and/or see the counselor for help in developing effective study strategies.
  • Students should be preparing for semester exams .

June - August

  • Students should consider working and performing community service.
  • Students should review National Honor Society and Governor Scholars Program requirements for applying for admission during the junior year.
  • Students should be sure to complete their summer reading and assignments.
